Tags are a simple, flat labeling system: a per-organization list of names (each with an optional color) that deals and contacts can carry to group or filter them outside of any structured field. Unlike a custom field, a tag isn’t tied to one resource type — the same tag vocabulary is shared between deals and contacts.

How a tag attaches to a record

A deal or contact stores its tags as a plain list of tag names, not as a reference to the tag record itself. That has one practical consequence worth knowing: deleting a tag from the organization’s vocabulary doesn’t retroactively remove it from records that already carry it — it just means that name won’t appear in the “add a tag” list going forward. Conversely, nothing stops a deal or contact from carrying a tag name that isn’t in the vocabulary at all (if it was added before the tag was deleted, for instance).
